Pilots in the golden era of aviation, navigated by following roads and looking for town names painted on the roofs of barns, water towers, and public buildings.
The history of avionics, beginning with old Range Finder Radio Receivers to modern GPS Navigation Systems complete with color moving maps, have reduced the pilots navigation burden to an exact science of little or no real effort.
I dare say that some pilots, fly hundreds of miles cross-country and never open a real map. They use only the computerized displays in their cockpits. (Don't tell the Feds)
However once that same pilot touches the ground, many times he or she is lost before they ever lose sight of the aircraft. They borrow the courtesy car to get something to eat. The line attendant said, "It's just down the road a piece." Finding themselves driving 25 minutes without a restaurant in sight, the passengers begin to wonder how they ever flew 600 miles without road signs and found the town. Who would have known, that the line attendant is lousy at giving directions. To him "down the road a piece" meant 21 miles into Scruggsville. If you would have known this you would have planned to get fuel at a different airport.
Fillup Flyer now has the answer!! Dynamically compiled with each listed possible fuel stop, waypoint, and destination FBO is a Logistical Data link.
Click on the hyperlink and your web browser sends a request back out through the internet and returns with a street map having the airport labeled prominently in the center of the map. The map is housed in a control panel looking similar to a radar display in an aircraft cockpit. The full color maps show major bodies of water, roads, towns, suburb names and major attractions just like a full color conventional real street map. In fact these maps were developed for use in the new GPS navigation systems built for automobiles.
Click on Hotel/Motel and the report will go out over the internet and return a link showing all the Hotel/Motels in the area surrounding the airport, shown graphically on the map. Beneath the map is a listing of name, address, and phone number.
Click on the hyperlink number next to the name and the map will redraw in close detail showing the exact location of that specific hotel, including address and phone number on the map. If the eight businesses listed aren't enough, click the hyperlinked word [More].
There is a field where you can type the name of a particular business and let the database search for that particular business. -OR- Enter the type of business for example Golf Course and get a listing of those nearby.
We can't say that this data is perfect, but we can honestly say that it amazed us to no end.
Best of all, it doesn't add a penny to the cost of the Fillup Flyer Report. Members still only pay $5.00, non-members $12.50 for a trip report. Even if it covers a 2000 mile trip. (Say New York to San Francisco)
